Apple is still facing shortages of the iPhone 4 and has instructed Genius Bars to swap faulty devices with the iPhone 4S, reports 9to5Mac.

Mid-April it was the white 16GB GSM iPhone 4 that was being swapped out at many Apple Stores. Now its black 16GB iPhone 4 and black 32GB iPhone 4.

Like with the 16GB white iPhone 4 constraint situation of mid-late April, Genius Bars without stock of the black 16GB iPhone 4 and black 32GB iPhone 4 replacements units have been instructed to provide customers with comparable iPhone 4S replacements. Not all Apple Stores are facing these constraints (but many are), and these constraints should clear up within a few weeks if the white iPhone 4 16GB constraint process follows suit here.

If you need to have your iPhone 4 serviced. Now might be a good time for a visit to the Genius Bar!

If you’re looking to have your iPhone unlocked from AT&T’s service, you can do so over the company’s online chat and Apple is the one actually doing the unlocking. These new details come courtesy of iPhone hacker and developer Grant Paul, and have been verified by The Next Web in a chat with AT&T.

We reported Friday that AT&T was beginning to unlock out-of-contract iPhones as of April 8th, today. Now a few more details of the process are available.

First, you can do this in-store, but you can also do it in an online chat at AT&T’s website. The process is painless and only takes a few minutes in the chat. The only piece of information required by AT&T is the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number, which can be found under Settings>General>About on your device.

Once you’ve completed the procedure, Apple pushes the unlock code during the next 72 hours to your email address, so the code comes from the mothership, not from AT&T. Once Apple completes the unlock request, a customer has to back-up and restore and tether the device to iTunes to complete the unlock process. This process is detailed in an Apple support document that was referenced by the AT&T representative we talked to.

Some users, like Juan Tarrío, have been told that a case would need to be opened and that it would be resolved by April 16th, rather than a code being delivered by email within 72 hours. The iMore forums also has a variety of different experiences with the unlock here, so that’s a good resource if you’re having issues.

Multiple device unlocks must be submitted through AT&T customer care and the maximum unlock codes that can be given for any account in a year is 5. For used devices, AT&T will check the account history of the original owner to make sure that the contract has been completed.

Remember that this is a service that AT&T will only perform if you have completed your original contract for the device.

This should allow for users to easily unlock older AT&T iPhones for use with international roaming or pay-as-you-go plans. iPhones will now operate on a handful of other carriers in the US like T-Mobile.

AT&T has announced that it will unlock off contract iPhones starting on Sunday, April 8th.

Here AT&T’s statement:

Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer’s account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.

This is excellent news for the many U.S. customers with locked iPhones.

New iPad Tops Three Million

CUPERTINO, California―March 19, 2012―Apple® today announced it has sold three million of its incredible new iPad®, since its launch on Friday, March 16. The new iPad features a stunning new Retina™ display, Apple’s new A5X chip with quad-core graphics, a 5 megapixel iSight® camera with advanced optics for capturing amazing photos and 1080p HD video, and still delivers the same all-day 10 hour battery life* while remaining amazingly thin and light. iPad Wi-Fi + 4G supports ultrafast 4G LTE networks in the US and Canada, and fast networks around the world including those based on HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA.**

G? Psh. Tell us when a software update transforms our phones into 5G devices: Then we’ll be excited.

Yes, you read that right. A Tuesday software update released by Apple bumped all iOS devices up to version 5.1 of the operating system. And users of iPhone 4S smartphones on AT&T’s network might have been a bit surprised to see the traditional “3G” icon in the device’s upper-left corner magically replaced by a brand-new “4G” icon.

In other words, Apple has finally patented a method for upgrading the hardware of one’s device over the airwaves.

We kid. In actuality, the update relates to the controversial way that AT&T defines its mobile networking. In AT&T land, the company considers its HSPA+ network – a speedy upgrade to AT&T’s HSPA-based “3G” network – a “4G” network.

Personalized iPad with Wi-Fi + 4G LTE for AT&T 16GB – White (3rd generation)
Part Number: PD369LL/A

Intlo.com has launched the online presale to over 200 Countries. Apple plans to launch the $499 gadget in 12 countries next Wednesday. It features a new “retina” screen which is sharper than a high definition TV, a faster processor and an improved camera.

However, experts say Apple’s decision to launch the new iPad in so many countries on the same day could leave consumers frustrated. In Britain, Apple warned on its website that “limited quantities” would be available. “There are bound to be shortages, demand will be huge,” said Stuart Miles of gadget website Pocket Lint.

Intlo.com will have a huge supply of iPads on launch day.

First Look

The most astonishing thing about the new iPad is, without doubt, the screen. It’s truly jawdropping, the sharpest and most impressive on any device currently on the market.

Photographs are astonishingly sharp, while video is amazing, particularly the high-definition titles downloaded from Apple’s store which we were shown. It’s rather like the switch from normal to HD TV, and makes going back to an “old” iPad very difficult.

However, it will take developers a little while to get used to the new screen, so expect to see a lot of frantic updates in the next few weeks. Elsewhere, the faster chip meant games looked stunning, approaching the quality of a dedicated games console. This is very much an evolution of the iPad, but still worthwhile, if for the screen alone. It is set to be the gadget of the year and puts clear water between Apple and its competition.

Been waiting patiently to get your hands on Samsung’s limited edition Series 9 laptop since its first showing at IFA in the fall? Then you really should have been looking into some other more sensible options in the interim. But if those non-crystal-studded alternatives didn’t strike your fancy, you’ll be glad to know that the laptop will finally be available in the US, exclusively on www.intlo.com, beginning tomorrow at 10PM. Unfortunately, the sure-to-be-premium price will only buy you a last-gen Series 9, with a Core i5-2467M processor and Windows 7 Home Premium for an OS.

If you aren’t using these apps already, then shame on you. These four apps have changed my productivity so considerably over the past couple of years that I can’t recommend them strongly enough to any OSX based designer, developer or general mac-productivity-aficionado.
AlfredApp

Spotlight has been one of the big killer differences between OSX and Windows for me. Frankly I’ve no idea if Vista or Win7 include better (faster) file indexing and nor do I really care, but certainly back in the WinXP days it was a big separator between the two platforms and I found myself using it constantly. Today, I don’t really touch it anymore. Why? Because Alfred does everything Spotlight can, but a hundred times faster and better. Launch programs, search for files, etc all directly from convenient keypress combinations. Genius.

Prada phone by LG 3.0 review

LG and Prada have a history of collaboration; their debut phone arrived around the same time as the first iPhone, sporting a black and white display, a petite footprint and a 2-megapixel camera. Next, the Prada II brandished a sliding QWERTY keyboard, a 5-megapixel camera and arrived at a time when WiFi functionality was a big enough deal to note on the press release. Four years on, the pair have rolled their sleeves and attempted to reclaim a place among the top devices, with classy aesthetics backed up by a strong hardware and attractively customized software. This is the team’s first attempt at an Android device, and on paper it’s got some respectable specifications, including a 4.3-inch NOVA Plus display, a dual-core processor and an 8-megapixel camera sensor that appears to be the same one found on LG’s 2011 flagship models. Granted, LG probably wasn’t ever planning to include its latest HD IPS screen on a phone where branding was dominated by the other partner, but this smartphone still wants to appeal beyond its good looks.

It’s now appeared in Korea and Western Europe and we were fortunate enough to borrow one from UK retailer Phones 4u for review. Are people willing to stump up the top-tier smartphone cash for a device with last year’s specifications? Do people want a Prada phone? Might a fashionista be more likely to plump for an iPhone? Or is it too popular? And what about that monochrome skin? We’ll talk it all out after the break.

The latest report is in from ComScore, and as you might expect, the news is sunshine and roses for the crews at Google and Apple. Both companies platforms charted some worthwhile month-over-month gains, as Android is estimated to account for 47.3 percent of smartphones in the US, while iOS runs a strong second with 26.9 percent. Meanwhile, former BlackBerry fans continue to scatter, as the platform now accounts for 16 percent of smartphone users. Similarly, Windows Phone (and whatever’s left of Windows Mobile) have taken it on the chin, and have fallen to just 4.7 percent market share. Without ever gaining much traction in the US, Symbian now makes up 1.4 percent of the smartphone pie. You’ll find a quick look at the manufacturing side of the equation, along with the full ComScore press release, after the break.

WSJ: Google Looking To Buy Yahoo

According to a story just out in the Wall Street Journal, Google has met with at least private equity firms about potentially helping them finance a deal to buy Yahoo.

Of course this would deal would get a good look over by the Feds.

However, as Scott Cleland the author of the book “Dark Side of Google” stated at the TRAFFIC conference this past week, the Feds ultimately allowed Google’s purchase of Doubleclick and Admob.

Mr. Cleland said about those acquisitions by Google:

“Both administrations, the Bush and the Obama administration completely blew it by approving the sale of DoubleClick and Admob”

“its game over”

“The government created a monopoly through there own ineptitude”

So although we all might at first blush say the Government will never allow that deal to go through, you never know and a Google spends a ton on Capital Hill lobbying every year

What it would mean to the domain industry?

It would have huge implications not just on PPC but of course on Search as well.

Yahoo is in the second year of a 10-year search partnership with Microsoft Corp. on Bing.com

Microsoft has also reportedly been in talks with private equity firms to purchase of Yahoo as well as the China Internet giant Alibaba.

The HP TouchPad nearly ended the relationship between Apple and Facebook, reports Mashable.

According to the site it all started with iOS 4. Apple had built Facebook into the operating system and wanted to code its own Facebook app because it lacked confidence in Facebook’s ability to build a great app. Facebook said no and negotiations broke down.

Then came Ping. Apple debuted Ping with Facebook integration but did not get permission from the social network. Their access was denied and Apple was forced to remove the integration.

Finally, Zuckerberg had promised Steve Jobs that its first ever tablet application would be for the iPad; however, about three months ago Jobs visited Facebook and learned that HP was about to release a native webOS Facebook application for the TouchPad.

When Jobs learned of the webOS Facebook app during his summer visit to Facebook, he was livid. Zuckerberg vowed to get the app pulled. But Jon Rubinstein, the former CEO of Palm and then the GM of HP’s webOS division, refused to halt the release of the app. Facebook responded by restricting HP’s access to its APIs – just as it had done with Apple’s Ping, a year earlier.

Was Facebook playing both sides? Absolutely, says a source close to HP. Facebook was made aware of the application and device integrations. The company knew what was coming, changed its tune right before release – and only did so to appease Apple. For its part, HP was furious. It had hoped the Facebook application would help differentiate the TouchPad from other tablets on the market. Another source says that HP may have considered legal action. In any case, the TouchPad was discontinued shortly after.

Although their relationship is described as tenuous, Apple and Facebook have reportedly made amends thanks to a common enemy, Google. The two are said to have been working together on a HTML5 platform for running mobile apps and could launch the Facebook iPad app within days.

Bringing ultra high-speed broadband

Earlier this year Google announced our plans to build and test ultra-high speed broadband networks in a small number of American communities. Since then, a team of Google engineers has been hard at work experimenting with new fiber optic technologies. And following a series of tests we’ve run on Google’s campus, we’re excited to announce the next step in our project.

We’ve reached an agreement with Stanford University to build an ultra-high speed broadband network to the university’s Residential Subdivision, a group of approximately 850 faculty- and staff-owned homes on campus. Through this trial, we plan to offer Internet speeds up to 1 gigabit per second—more than 100 times faster than what most people have access to today. We plan to start breaking ground in early 2011.

New Friend-Watch App Lets You Stalk Your Facebook

Friend-Watch is a new Facebook application that stalks your friends list, watching for changes you might not otherwise notice. This includes things like people who change their name, add you as a friend, deactivate their account, restore their account, delete you, block you or unblock you. It also tracks general trends, like friend counts and gender breakdowns. In short, it’s like analytics program for your personal Facebook profile.

The app was created by developer Andrew McGrath, who recently joined social media management company Syncapse (also a maker of Facebook applications) as Director of Platform Operations.

McGrath previously created the now-banned app “Who Isn’t My Friend?” This former app, which notified you when someone “unfriended” you, quickly ended up on Facebook’s blacklist since Facebook frowns on “unfriend-ing” trackers. But this time around, McGrath says he talked to Facebook first, adjusting the application according to its guidelines.

The new app is more analytics-focused, plotting things like the number of friends you have versus the average number of friends for the typical Facebook user, breakdowns of friends by gender and, soon, a map showing where your friends live. This is in addition to the above-mentioned tracked items, like the blocks, deactivations and name changes.

70% of the world is not being addressed by the current iPhone as it currently stands, according to Asymco’s Horace Dediu.
Using data published by Deutsche Bank and the ITU, Dediu has determined that roughly 1.5 billion mobile subscribers are post-paid and 3.7 billion are pre-paid.
That means that nearly 70% of the world is not being addressed by the iPhone as it currently stands. Put another way, a shift in positioning might result in a 250% increase in addressable market.

It turns out their own, in-house client app for the iPhone is the worst of all the major Twitter apps for hogging data. In fact the official Twitter App uses double the data of the Tweetdeck iPhone app, according to a new study by mobile data management startup Onavo. Perhaps it’s just as well Twitter bought Tweetdeck recently…

Ok, this one’s odd. In fact, we didn’t believe the images until a video just surfaced showing Nokia CEO, Stephen Elop, foolishly asking a crowd of people to “put away their cameras” for the unveiling of something “super confidential,” codenamed “Sea Ray.” Naturally, a few people ignored the plea for “no pictures please” and, indeed, someone leaked what appears to be a Nokia-produced video of the unveiling to the blogosphere. What is it? Why, it’s Nokia’s first Windows Phone. While it looks nearly identical to the just announced N9, the different LED placement on the back (in line with the same 8 megapixel Carl Zeiss lens) confirms it’s a new device as does the additional hardware button (for shutter release, we presume) along the side. And the fact that it’s running Windows Phone 7 Mango seals the deal. See a few more shots and the full uncut video (and relevant snippet) after the break.

Skype Confirms iPad App Leak is Real

After plenty of success with the iPhone version of the Skype app, the company is finally releasing an official version for the iPad. Skype hasn’t announced a date for release yet, but video of the app has leaked out online, and the app is expected to be approved soon. Skype VP of Consumer and Product Design Rick Osterloh had a quick chat with us here at TUAW about the new app and what Skype expects to get out of it.
Osterloh says that the iPhone version of Skype burst out of the gate quickly, with a big launch and “a userbase that doubled in just a month’s time.” And he said the iPad version should “have a similar success,” especially since it’s basically the same in functionality: chatting, audio and video calling, and all of the other standard actions you can expect from Skype. The current app has been in testing for a few months now, and Osterloh is excited to unleash it on the public.
A few features in the full PC/Mac app didn’t make it in, Osterloh says, perhaps most notably the ability to do file sharing. But that’s obviously just because of the way the iPad deals with files. While the company was fine with simply having an iPhone app that was iPad compatible during the first release of the iPad, the camera in the iPad 2 was what made this app “super compelling.” (more…)

Apple could buy out every major phone vendor except Samsung in cash, according to Asymco’s Horace Dediu. The analyst expects Apple to have about $70 billion in Cash, Cash Equivalents, Short-term marketable securities and long-term Marketable Securities.
Dediu estimates the enterprise values of the public companies selling 75% of all phones sold world-wide are as follows:
● Nokia $22.6b
● RIM $13.8b
● HTC $25.4b
● Motorola Mobility $4.2b
● Sony Ericsson $0.21b x 14 = $3.0b
● Samsung (Phone Business) $3.76b x 14 = $53b
● LG (Phone Business) $10b
He also notes that “as market values of phone vendors continue to decline, Apple’s cash will continue to grow dramatically. Indeed, a time may soon come when Apple’s cash will be worth more than the entire phone industry.”

teve Jobs and co. showed off all kinds of cool new features during the debut of iOS 5 at WWDC earlier this month. We had the chance to take a few of them for a spin, when we tested the beta build of the mobile operating system, and now that more and more folks have tried their hand at iOS 5, more and more features are getting their turn to shine. Here’s a list of some of the cooler ones we’ve seen in the last few weeks.

  • Apple has added the ability to make FaceTime calls over 3G — though rumor has it that this may be a beta-only feature, which carriers can choose to disable, over obvious data usage concerns.
  • AirPlay Mirroring has been shown off. The feature lets users display video from an iPad 2 on an HDTV, by way of Apple TV, for those times when you just can’t keep your tablet content to yourself. (Read)
  • The new software also offers up the ability to sync 1080p video to iOS 5 devices, opening the door to speculation that future iPads and iPhones may be able to play back content at full 1080p. (Read)
  • Like to play your iTunes over your car stereo? Good news, iOS 5 will transfer audio information like album, track, and artist names over Bluetooth. (Read)

It’s over. The patent battle between Nokia and Apple just ended not with an injunction, but with a press release citing a license agreement and payments from Apple to Espoo. The specifics of the agreement are confidential, but Nokia does say that Apple will make a one-time payment followed by on-going royalties. So, while Nokia may be having trouble selling its zombied handsets, at least its IP portfolio can help fill the coffers during the transition to Windows Phone.
